4 Reasons Why Your AC Might Not Be Cooling Properly

Imagine coming home after a long day on a hot summer evening only to come home and have a warm home because your air conditioning is not working properly. That is something no one wants.

If you are having any kinds of AC problems, you are probably uncomfortable in your home and feeling frustrated. There are many reasons why your AC could be causing trouble. The best way to figure out what is wrong is calling in professionals to take a look.

To give you an idea, here are some reasons why your AC might not be cooling your home effectively.

1. Dirty Air Filters

One of the biggest reasons why your AC is not properly cooling is dirty or blocked air filters.

If you haven’t cleaned or changed the AC filters in a while, then chances are you can easily fix the problem by getting a new set of filters.

Over time your air filters can get clogged with dust and debris. When that happens, it restricts the airflow and makes it harder for your AC to do its job. Dirty filters not only reduce the efficiency of your air conditioner but can also lead to other problems like frozen coils and compressor overheating.

To avoid this issue in the future, you should inspect them every month and replace them every three months or sooner if they look dirty.

2. Refrigerant Issues

The entire reason why you air conditioner is able to do its job is because of the refrigerant. So naturally, if your AC is low on refrigerant, it won’t be able to cool your home properly.

If your AC isn’t cooling, you should call a technician for residential air conditioning repair to come and take a look. They can locate and fix the leak, and recharge your system with the correct amount of refrigerant to restore your AC’s cooling capacity.

3. Thermostat Problems

Sometimes, the reason why your AC isn’t cooling properly is because of the thermostat.

If your thermostat isn’t working correctly, your AC might not be able to cool your home either. Some of the common thermostat problems include incorrect settings, dead batteries, or the thermostat being placed in a poor location.

You can start by checking the settings on your thermostat to make sure they’re correct. If it’s set to “fan” instead of “cool,” switch it to “cool.” Replace the batteries if it’s not working properly and make sure the thermostat is placed in an area that accurately reflects the temperature of your home, possibly away from direct sunlight or drafts.

If the problem isn’t solved, you can have a professional take a look at it.

4. Leaky Ducts

The ducts in your home are responsible for carrying the cool air from your AC throughout your house. If there are leaks or gaps in your ducts, then the cool air can escape before it reaches your living spaces. That can make it seem like your AC isn’t cooling properly when, in fact, the air is just being lost.

You can inspect your ductwork for any visible leaks or damage. If you find any, use metal tape or mastic sealant to fix small leaks.

If the issue is bigger or you are not sure how to check the ducts, you should contact a professional who specializes in HVAC installation and repair.
